Not Another Teen Movie

We are in a sad age when spoofs have becoming something of a farce in itself. Revolving manly around disgusting toilet humour, borderline abusive sex jokes and acting so bad that it isn’t trying to be ironically over the top. Spoofs have become subject to sequels, please the banal and throwing intelligence out the window. There used to be a golden age of spoofs, where Airplane! and Hot Shots relied on their epic play in words and astute attentive characterisation bringing a whole host of wit to our tables. And then there is this one, that toes the line and sometimes skips between each version of spoofs.

Not Another Teen Movie is basically a mash up of She’s All That, American Pie and Bring It On. Offensive and sometimes clever, it revolves around Jake, a popular jock at John Hughes High School. After breaking up with his girlfriend, he and his friend enter a bet that he can changed the unpopular Janey Bloggs into a thing of beauty so she can win prom queen. On the other side, Janey’s young brother Mitch has entered into a pack with his friends that they can lose their virginity by prom. And layers upon layers of ridiculous poking at teen movies. Directed by Joel Gallen, and written by what can only be described as a locker room collection, Not Another Teen Movie is tripe with a bit of bite.

Why is it Bad?

It is heavily reliant on toilet humour throughout. There is an actual toilet scene of a woman shitting, then people falling on her and a launch of waste laden water spills onto hundreds of teenagers. There is fart jokes, poop jokes and vomit jokes and it is so saturated with them that it is sickening. Those with weak dispositions should fear this movie. It relies too much on bodily excavations that the humour that might be clever is weighed down literally by excrement. Play to an audience that things anything that dribbles out of an arsehole is hilarious, Not Another Teen Movie at times abandons any sort of astute observational for the contents of a blocked toilet.  onto hundreds of teenagers. There is fart jokes, poop jokes and vomit jokes and it is so lling on her so

Why is it Good?

Despite the piss and shit flying in every direction, there are some genuine funny moments that focus on deprecating the teen genre and movies of that era. Some funny scenes include the “Janey’s Got A Gun” moment trying to lift itself from 10 Things I Hate About You and failing with the song choice. The impromptu musical number about getting ready for prom and the cheerleaders are possible some of the highlights. It is able to satire and be a witty enjoyable fest which makes the previous part of this review feel a lot worse.

Not to mention it has Chris Evans who would later go on to be Captain America, so it’s always nice to remind yourself of his roots.

Yes. Starving

It is that awful kind of awesome. The wickedly wicked. The sad and the sublime. The offensive but the outstanding. If anything, don’t we all need a movie to zone out to and laugh at disgusting moments?

Yes we do.
