Mr. Nobody

Jared Leto is definitely the man of the moment. We are all in awe of the bright blue eyed Adonis who has graced our lives in a glorious way. You also can't help but envy him a little because he is super talented at everything. He's a singer, he's an actor and he's stunning. I mean, I'm not here to talk about looks but...

Come on...

Anyway, from his Oscar winning performance in Dallas Buyers Club to taking the reigns as The Joker in the upcoming Suicide Squad film, to all the films that came beforehand, Leto has often picked different, daring and dashing (sorry) roles that capture the essence of his talent.

None more so than the twisting, complex narratives of Mr. Nobody.

Literally a film where you have to concentrate really hard with your brain cells because it is an intricate plot. So much so that the tiny hamster within my brain ran ragged at the first watch. Don’t feel bad if you have to watch it again, it took me many moronic spins to fully accept its splendour. Mr. Nobody centres on an 118 year old man who is the last mortal on Earth after future generations discover immortality. Seen as a celebrating, Nemo Nobody (no, really,) tries to regale his story despite a wondering mind-set. As he exposes his life, people discover that he was able to live different lives after following each timeline that splits following large events in his life…

As mentioned before, it certainly is a tricky film to follow. After all, you have branches that unfold and are embellished along the way, creating more pathways with each decision. Therefore you wind up with roughly six adult versions of Jared Leto and have to race alongside him, figuring out the layout of this man’s many lives and the dramas that come with each one. Jaco Von Dormel could easily have let the mythology and psychology of a man split into voluminous versions of himself but delicately weaves this alluring masterpiece, steeped in wild philosophy and unnerving multifarious worlds. Dormel conducts his themes with vivid passion, clear research and enough drama that the stories kinetically bounce into one another with detail. Like a Newton’s cradle, Dormel keeps the stories swinging, ricocheting past, present and future evocatively well…

Of course, the films leading star is as much of a draw as  this heavily thoughtful romp through time… Leto has to convey separate entities of his character and confronts them; swimming beside them with such conviction that he evolves on screen exquisitely well. Playing different facets of someone in a film that juxtaposes their worlds simultaneously is no easy feat, but Leto manages to differ the roles with small degrees that make them counterparts, twirling in a merry dance of worlds. Leto becomes this must-see performer in this role (or roles) and it is elevating to watch him.

Mr. Nobody brings to light the wonder of our universe. What happens if there are many universes of us living out paralleleds because of a decisions once made? What happens if you could visit them, drifting in and out of "what could’ve beens" and “what ifs”? That allows the film to capture a wonder and curiosity about this universe and dimensions. There's also vibrant visuals that enhance the vivid story...

..much like Alice down the rabbit black hole…
