Future Faces To Look Out For

04/01/2014 17:02

A couple of days ago, I let you know about the movies I was most looking forward to January. A little bit of a cop out because I had originally planned to write about the best movies of the year that are going to be amazingly good and incredible. But there are too many to coherently write them into one article without using the phrases “ughfhhthth” and “dhorhworwr.” Nevertheless, I plan to write an article like that every month so you know what movies I’ll be clambering over seats to watch.

But what about those faces?  The babies of the acting industry. A new year means fresh new talent coming out of the woodwork. Someone who is lesser known could launch into the stratosphere and become a household favourite. Even if we have seen them about before, one such movie could solidify your name on the walk of fame. So without further ado, here is a list of young artists and names you should look out for because of their talent and incredibleness.

Brie Larson

Brie Larson is pretty well known for her singing career and making some appearances in movies. Except she isn’t known enough. In fact, watching 21 Jump Street for the first time I remarked, “oh it’s Envy Adams from Scott Pilgram” and was still met with confused looks. Unfair because Brie Larson is ridiculously talented and that’s not just because she can wrap her vocals around a good song. Recently, she impressed critics worldwide for her portrayal of Grace in the brilliant Short Term 12. Nominated for a ridiculous amounts of award (no doubt an Oscar nomination will come,) Larson is going to be a regular feature and produce more stellar work like this.

Jane Levy

If you haven’t already watched it, I urge you to go and watch Suburgatory. Not only is it funny in every way a television show can be funny but it is intelligent and different, and also stars the terribly underrated Alan Tudyk. But most impressive in the show is fiery and pragmatic Tessa played by the brilliant Jane Levy. Levy made her debut in the American version of Shameless (make your own televisions now, this is just getting silly.) Her filmography is something to be desired, appearing in Fun Size and the Evil Dead remake. However, her roles and acting superiority mean she is no doubt going to star in a lot more things. This year sees her in Frank and About Alex.

Daniel Kaluuya

There is always an acted that you feel has cropped up so many times, he is literally following your life. I feel that way with Daniel Kaluuya who has turned up in so many of my favourite British television shows, including the short lived but fantastic The Fades and one of the missed but still genius Black Mirror episodes. His cinematic career looks to be heating up too with a minor role in Kick-Ass 2 this year. Sit up and take notice, Kaluuya is a unique voice from England who manages to put rage and anger yet vulnerability in his roles as well as an unparalleled comedy in some.

Lupita Nyong’o

All eyes as it comes to award season seem to be on 12 Years A Slave and in particular, Chiwetel Ejinfor (who is getting recognition at last.) But beside him and with some phenomenal acting is Kenyan actresses Lupita Nyong’o. Making her American debut in Steve McQueen’s epic, Nyong’o is a fierce talent her who manages to convey the brutality, honesty and pain that her character suffers with an incredible and enchanting precision. The hope here is that her brilliance in the movie will lead to a long career with her also starring in Liam Nelsons high flying action movie Non-Stop. Oh and did I mention she recently graduated from Yale? That is some pretty stellar acting. Nyong’o is hopefully going to sweep the boards with her recent performances and have a very length film career.

Alden Ehrenreich

You may recognise Ehrenreich from the young adult movie Beautiful Creatures and his atrocious Southern accent narration. In fact, Ehrenreich is possible the best thing about this movie, managing to convey a quite realistic love affair between a witch and a mortal. More so, he hasn’t just popped up in teen friendly movies and actually has appeared in independent and stunning movies such as Twixt! Stoker and Blue Jasmine. Much like Robert Pattinson, don’t be afraid to judge him outside the prepubescent Twilight-esque movies and see him as a talented actor!

Is there anyone you think I should know about?
