Blade
When you go to watch a vampire movie...what do you want from it? Lots of blood? Plenty of fangs? Romance? Torn morals? Antagonists who are protagonists? A brilliant villain? Scary moments? Action? Humans and vampires in a twist against their fates? Every vampire movie has its different angle. You can either love an en mass romance between vampires and humans. Or you can want some Van Damme esque hero to come and save the day, bursting vampires into balls of dust and slamming stakes into hearts. Yeah, there is a big difference between vampire movies. And guess which side Blade is on?

Exhilarating from start to finish, Blade tells the tale of the namesake hero. Half vampire and half human, this mixed breed of hero chose the side of the good. Aligning with veteran vampire hunter Whistler, Blade fights his instinct by dousing as many creatures of the night with holy water as well as shooting them with holy concoction. When Frost, a human changed to vampire, plans to take over the vampire race and turn every human into a vampire, Blade must fight with all his power to stop him. Constantly battling the vampire within him as well as falling a romantic fling with Dr Jenson, who has been attacked, Blade has everything the vampire film fan would want.... And then some.
Blade is above all things an incredible action movie. If you want people drop kicking other people in the face in a blaze of blood and glory then look no further than Blade. Fans of series such as Buffy will enjoy the hunt of vampires as Blade, a “day walker” goes to extraordinary lengths to save the human race from extinction. Wesley Snipes, surprisingly, captures a great protagonist here who is battling his own demon growing inside of him. Bulked up and fleshed out, Snipes brings a strange humanity to the role. Kris Kristofferson as Whistler, the bitter and vengeful “side kick” is a great angry anchor for our hero and Stephen Dorff is excellent as the uprising Deacon Frost. Blade kicks plenty of ass as well as bringing a brilliant story with fantastic elements merged together to have you on the edge of your seat.
But not only this, Blade is beautifully shot. There are excellent visuals and high style. Blade not only highlights the vampire tale by exaggerating shadows against walls, swishing long leather coats and having crazy costumes for the classic long lived vampires. One scene in particular which is so entrancing, dare I say, dazzling is one of the beginning scenes where a human named Dennis ends up in a club with hot girl. Needless to say, club nights always end badly and it turns out everyone in the club is a vampire. What is so striking about this scene is the head pounding, dizzy club scene as Dennis follows a girl. It’s crazily shot until the sprinklers come on. Then, bam, shower of blood on the body of vampires. The scene is incredibly shot from Dennis’ point of view. It is heart pounding.
Blade is a treat. I’m not going to sit here and say it’s bad. Blade, at the very essence, has damn near everything from a vampire movie that you will want. The action is great, the storyline is good, there are quips galore and the acting is shockingly amazing. It is that movie you’ll watch over because it is above all entertainment. Not to mention an end of movie turn that will have you screaming at the T.V. Move over vampires, the human race has a saviour. And that is the form of Blade.
