Black Sheep

When you think of New Zealand, what do you think of? Flight of the Concords? The All Blacks? The Hobbit scenery? Sheep? Yep, sheep. Somehow  New Zealand is famous for having an extremely large population of such a small island. In fact, there is an estimated 1, 078, 000, 000 sheep in the world with 40 million of those concentrated in the country. Now, imagine if all those sheep started to get infected with a zombie like illness that turns them into man eating beasts where one bite turns a human into one of them. If that seems too ridiculous to you, don’t worry, you don’t have to imagine; you can watch the horror comedy Black Sheep.

Black Sheep revolves around Henry. After a ridiculously sick practical joke by his older brother Angus and the death of their father, Henry has become scared of sheep. Moving away, Henry hopes to cure his fear and complete a course, moving on with his life. Fifteen years later, Angus has plans to sell the family estate causing Henry to move back and face his fear of sheep. However, someone has been experimenting and the sheep have a nasty disposition about them. Nasty meaning that they are zombie monsters and an unfortunate incident with eco warriors means the disease has started to spread. And Henry, our hero afraid of sheep, is caught up in the whole ordeal.

While this is definitely a stale treat, Black Sheep is one of those movies that you know what you are head into. And luckily, it is a horror movie that really throws you straight it into the action knowing full well that you are going to see a lot of nonsense. By god, it is a lot of nonsense. But it is fun. The graphic monster sheep are brilliant and the gore is plentiful. If they weren’t, you know, sheep, the monsters are pretty scary. Just this time they are covered in fluffy wool and baa so the terror is sliced with fun. The blood drips from every wound and the hilarious moment when you are bitten and are turned into a sheep, oh the transformation is fun!

But apart from that Black Sheep is shameless with its humour. Do you want toilet humour? It has it. Do you want sexual innuendos? Oh boy it has it? Do you want to see a sheep try to attack humans by jamming its head through a wooden door? YES YES YOU DO! And Black Sheep can offer it all. Everyone here is bumbling fools and it is so outrageously fun to watch that you will enjoy every second of watching it.

Black Sheep doesn’t try to pull the wool over anyone’s eye and it certainly isn’t sheepish. This treat from New Zealand has a couple of off moments, particularly when it tries to delve into sentiment. But the end result is a fantastic punch horror comedy that hits in all the right places.  It rams the enjoyment down your throat and doesn’t give a hoof about anything else. It is an excellent thrill ride that is above all highly entertaining. Let your brain take the day off, get your friends over with a few drinks and laugh yourself silly with this little treat.

Ewe would be crazy not to.

Ok, that’s enough sheep jokes.
